Skeleton Cupcakes

These Skeleton Cupcakes are spooky, silly, and so much fun to make! Using marshmallows, pretzels, and a little frosting magic, kids can build their own edible skeleton right on top of a cupcake.

Skill Level, Time, and Supervision

Skill Level: 7+ with grown-up help for melting chocolate
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Decorate Time: 2–3 minutes per cupcake
Yield: Varies (instructions written per cupcake)

Why You’ll Love Making This

• Combines baking and crafting into one fun Halloween activity.
• Kids get to design their own skeleton faces.
• Great for Halloween parties, bake sales, or a classroom treat.
• No fancy tools needed—just marshmallows, pretzels, and cupcakes!

What You’ll Need

Supplies (per cupcake)

• 1 pre-baked cupcake
• 1 spoonful frosting
• 1 tbsp crushed Oreo cookies
• 1 large marshmallow
• 1 black food writer pen
• 1 lollipop stick
• 4 mini marshmallows
• 3 chocolate-covered pretzels (yogurt-covered works too)
• 3 blocks almond bark or candy coating (if coating pretzels yourself)
• Parchment paper

Step-by-Step Instructions

If Making Chocolate-Covered Pretzels

  1. Melt almond bark or candy coating in 30-second increments, stirring after each round.
  2. Dip pretzels into chocolate and use a fork to shake off excess.
  3. Place on parchment to set. For a thicker coat, dip a second time once hardened.

Assemble the Skeleton Cupcakes

  1. Frost the Cupcake
Spread one spoonful of frosting over the top of a pre-baked cupcake. Sprinkle with 1 tbsp crushed Oreos for “dirt.”
  2. Make the Skeleton Head
Draw a skeleton face on a large marshmallow using a black food writer pen. Set aside to dry.
  3. Build the Skeleton Body
Insert a lollipop stick into the cupcake. Slide on one mini marshmallow, followed by a chocolate-covered pretzel. Repeat this pattern two more times to form the skeleton’s ribcage.
  4. Finish the Skeleton
Top the lollipop stick with the decorated marshmallow head.

👩‍👧‍👦 Parent Tip: Have kids draw different skeleton faces—happy, scary, or silly—for variety.

🍽️ Chef Tip: Want extra crunch? Mix the Oreo cream filling into your frosting before topping.

Pro Tips for Success

• Use thicker lollipop sticks for better stability.
• If pretzels break while dipping, just snack on them—it happens!
• Chill pretzels for a few minutes before assembling to avoid melting.

Make It Your Own

• Try different candy coatings—dark chocolate, white chocolate, or even colorful melts.
• Swap the Oreos for graham cracker crumbs to make a sandy skeleton scene.
• Add gummy worms crawling out of the “dirt” for a spooky surprise.

Tips for Grown Ups Assisting

• Supervise chocolate melting—it heats quickly.
• Help insert the lollipop stick so cupcakes don’t crumble.
• Keep food-safe markers handy for drawing clean faces.

FAQ from Chefs-in-Training

Q: Can I use store-bought dipped pretzels instead of making my own?
A: Absolutely! Yogurt- or chocolate-covered pretzels work perfectly.

Q: Do I have to use a lollipop stick?
A: Toothpicks can work for mini versions, but lollipop sticks are sturdier for full-size skeletons.

Q: Can I prepare these in advance?
A: Yes—assemble the skeletons the day before and store in a cool, dry place.

Why These Skeletons Steal the Show
